What X is
X is a social platform for public posting, real-time conversation, and creator content, formerly known as Twitter, which launched in 2006. Its ownership history consists of completed events: in October 2022, Elon Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter; in July 2023 the platform was renamed X, and the domain moved to x.com in May 2024. On March 28, 2025, Musk’s xAI acquired X Corp in an all-stock deal — announced valuations were $33 billion for X ($45 billion including $12 billion in debt) and $80 billion for xAI, combining into X.AI Holdings. How X differs from Grok and Grok Bot
The three are easy to conflate: X is the social platform that carries public posts and real-time discussion; Grok is the model family and assistant from xAI; and Grok Bot is an agent product built on a persistent cloud computer. After the acquisitions they belong to one corporate family but occupy different layers — platform, model, and agent. X is also one of the primary channels where AI labs announce model releases.
