What WeChat is
WeChat (Chinese name Weixin) is Tencent’s messaging and social platform, launched in 2011. Weixin, serving mainland China, and WeChat, serving other regions, are separate but interoperable sister services; per Tencent’s official site, their combined monthly active accounts exceeded 1.4 billion as of the first quarter of 2026. Usage and entry points
Individual users rely primarily on the mobile app, with PC/Mac desktop versions alongside; WeChat Web logs in by scanning a QR code with the phone and covers basic chat. Content creators and developers use a different entry point: the WeChat Official Accounts Platform registers and manages service accounts, official accounts (subscription accounts), Mini Programs, and WeCom (WeChat Work) accounts. Mini Programs are lightweight apps that run inside WeChat, and official accounts are used for publishing and reader communication.
