Definition
Engagement rate measures how much an audience interacts with content, usually computed as the number of interactions such as likes, comments, shares and saves divided by impressions, reach or followers, and expressed as a percentage.
How it works
The denominator is not standardized: dividing by impressions reflects how compelling a single post is, while dividing by followers makes cross-account comparison easier. When comparing platforms or accounts, make sure both sides use the same basis first.
Usage
Engagement rate appears in social media reviews, ad campaign evaluations and creator reporting, and it is often used to compare content performance across channels when deciding where to invest.
Related and confusable terms
Engagement rate is one of the common key performance indicators (KPIs) in content operations. It represents a growth path driven by social interaction, distinct from search engine optimization (SEO, which earns traffic through search rankings), and the two often coexist in the same operating plan.
