Definition
Steam Next Fest is a limited-time event run by Steam itself. Valve’s Steamworks documentation defines it as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos” — one week dedicated to demos of unreleased games, held three times a year in February, June, and October. See the official documentation.
How it works
Per the official documentation, participating games must meet a set of conditions: they have not previously joined a Next Fest (each title may participate only once), the associated Steamworks account is in good standing, the store page is public, a publicly playable demo is live when the event begins, and the game will not be released before the edition concludes; prologues or short-form versions of already released games do not qualify. Placement is completely randomized during the first days, with an optional livestream section, a Press Preview for selected outlets, and a post-event wrap-up page featuring the most-played demos; demos may stay up after the event ends.
Usage
For players, it is a chance to try a concentrated batch of upcoming games and decide what to wishlist; for developers, Valve frames the event’s purpose as exposing future releases to potential fans and gathering real-time feedback.
Related and confusable terms
Next Fest is an event, whereas Steam is the platform that carries game distribution, the store, and community features — the two are catalogued separately. A festival demo is also a different mechanism from Early Access: the documentation notes that unreleased Early Access games may participate, but the game must remain unlaunched through the event.
Episode discussion
In Weekly #007, in the chapter “AI 游戏破圈:移植、网页游戏与上瘾机制” (Chinese transcript), Guizang remarks that “the Steam Next Fest is on right now, and lots of people are complaining about a flood of AI junk” — developers cloning proven gameplay with AI and stuffing in low-quality art — and when Yang Pan asks “can I still catch the Next Fest?”, he answers that the event is still running. These are the participants’ observations about one edition, not a description of the event’s mechanics. See the chapter.
