Planet Zoo

Frontier Developments’ zoo simulation game centered on habitats, animal care and management.

Definition

Planet Zoo is a zoo construction and management simulation game developed and published by Frontier Developments, centered on building habitats, caring for animals and running a park, with a strong emphasis on realistic animal behavior and wildlife conservation. Purchase and platform information is on the Steam store page.

Series and releases

The Windows version was released on November 5, 2019; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions followed on March 26, 2024. It is a spiritual successor to the Zoo Tycoon series, and its creation tools carry over from Frontier’s theme-park game Planet Coaster. A sequel, Planet Zoo 2, was announced on May 28, 2026 and released on October 13, 2026.

Usage

Players design a zoo from the ground up: shaping terrain and vegetation, building enclosures and guest facilities, meeting each species’ needs for space, environment and social group, breeding animals, and balancing ticket prices, staff and finances. The game is known for depth on both the building and the animal-management side.

Planet Zoo and Zoo Tycoon are different series by different developers; the former is only a spiritual successor to the latter. Planet Coaster is Frontier’s sister game about theme parks, not zoos. The three should not be confused.

Discussed on Next Token

In episode 007, in the chapter “Vibe Coding 是生产力,还是最自由的游戏?” (Chinese transcript), 歸藏 said “很多人喜欢玩创造类游戏,动物园之星、双点医院这种” — many people love creative games like Planet Zoo and Two Point Hospital — and argued that their freedom and sense of achievement fall short of vibe coding (episode 007 transcript). This is a participant’s personal judgement about creative games; see the full chapter.
