Definition
Dragon Ball is a TV anime adapted from Akira Toriyama’s manga, following Goku’s adventures and the search for the Dragon Balls, produced by Toei Animation. The original manga ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from November 1984 to May 1995, collected in 42 tankōbon volumes. Toei Animation’s official page states the TV anime was broadcast on the Fuji TV network from February 1986 to April 1989, Sundays at 19:00–19:30 (see the official page).
How it works
As an adaptation, the anime was produced on the basis of Toriyama’s manga: the copyright line reads “©バードスタジオ／集英社・フジテレビ・東映アニメーション” (Bird Studio / Shueisha / Fuji TV / Toei Animation). The TV anime was followed by sequel series such as Dragon Ball Z, and together with the manga, films and games forms the Dragon Ball franchise.
Usage
Viewers watch it through TV reruns, officially released home video and streaming channels; Toei’s official page also lists entries for Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, which serve as entry points to the franchise’s anime history. In Chinese-speaking contexts the series is also known by titles such as “七龙珠”.
Related and confusable terms
“Dragon Ball” means different things by context: Toriyama’s original manga, Toei’s TV anime, the franchise as a whole, and its many game adaptations. This entry covers the anime; episode 007 only borrows the wish-granting dragon story device as an analogy and discusses no specific game or series entry. Searching “龙珠” also returns same-name items such as a livestreaming platform and a medicinal ointment.
Discussed on Next Token
In episode 007, in the chapter “DeepSeek 的推理速度，怎样改变产品体验？” (Chinese transcript), 杨攀 used the wish-granting dragon as a metaphor for instant feedback after handing a task to AI: “这个就是神龙许愿嘛，七龙珠里，你让神龙许愿，其实神龙背后去干活去了，但是它秒回，就去干了，一下就干完了”. 向阳乔木 then mentioned the popular phrase “许愿式编程” (wish-style programming), and 歸藏 said it was a talking point of DeepSeek’s 1017 update. This is an analogy borrowed from the story, not a discussion of the work itself (full chapter).
