Definition
A key opinion leader (KOL) is a person with recognized expertise or influence in a specific field whose views materially affect the attitudes and decisions of a target audience. The term is common in marketing and covers experts, academics and creators.
How it works
Brands work with KOLs to borrow the trust they have built in a niche: the KOL produces reviews, explainers or recommendations, and the audience receives them with that trust attached. Collaboration results are usually measured with exposure, engagement and conversion metrics.
Usage
KOLs show up in tech reviews, consumer campaigns and industry events, and podcasts or interview shows often invite them as guests. Selection usually starts with their standing among the target audience rather than raw follower counts.
Related and confusable terms
KOL overlaps with “influencer”, but KOL stresses domain authority while influencer stresses mass reach. Collaboration outcomes are typically tracked with key performance indicators (KPIs).
