Definition
AI slop is digital content produced in high volume with generative AI that is perceived as lacking in effort, quality or meaning — typically created to gain traffic, earn money or deceive people.
How it works
Low generation cost is the root cause: a model can produce large amounts of plausible-looking text, images or video in minutes, with no human craft involved. Where distribution channels reward volume, mass-generated low-quality content crowds out attention that better material would otherwise receive.
Usage
The term is mostly used critically: batch-generated posts in social feeds, machine-written articles padding SEO sites, or comments impersonating genuine opinions. It also anchors discussions about platform governance — how to keep carefully made content from being buried under cheap, high-volume output.
Related and confusable terms
AI slop concerns the quality of what careless use of generative AI produces; AI native describes products deliberately architected around AI capability. They are not opposites. Whether a piece of content is slop is judged by its quality and intent, not by whether AI was involved.
