What Heroes of Might and Magic is
Heroes of Might and Magic is a fantasy turn-based strategy game series: players move heroes across an adventure map, capture towns and mines, gather resources and recruit armies, and battles take place on a separate tactical grid screen. Heroes grow through experience, artifacts and spells, borrowing role-playing elements. The series was created by New World Computing, the studio founded by Jon Van Caneghem, and the first title, Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest, was released in 1995.
Series history
According to Wikipedia, New World Computing developed the games from 1995 to 2003, with 3DO taking over publishing in 1996; after 3DO shut down, Ubisoft has held and published the series since 2003. Later installments came from different studios: New World Computing closed after Heroes IV (2002), Heroes V (2006) was developed by Nival Interactive, Heroes VI (2011) by Black Hole Entertainment, and Heroes VII (2015) by Limbic Entertainment. A new title, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, is developed by Unfrozen with Hooded Horse and Ubisoft as co-publishers; its release status is on the official Ubisoft series page, which also collects a recap of the series’ 30th-anniversary celebrations from October 2025.
