What is Google DeepMind
Google DeepMind is Google’s artificial intelligence research organization, formed by combining two labs: DeepMind, founded in 2010, and Google Brain, which started at Google X in 2011. The official About page says it “brings together two of the world’s leading AI labs” into one team led by co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis, with the mission to “build AI responsibly to benefit humanity.” Its relationship to the parent company is straightforward: Google DeepMind is the frontier AI research arm inside Google.

- The DeepMind line: it pioneered deep reinforcement learning from 2010, with the DQN program learning 49 Atari games from raw pixels; in 2015 AlphaGo became the first computer program to defeat a Go world champion, followed by AlphaZero, MuZero, and AlphaStar; WaveNet text-to-speech and AlphaFold (2020, protein structure prediction) also came from this line.
