What Descript is
Descript is an audio and video editor that, per its official description, “lets you edit by editing text.” Recordings and uploads are transcribed automatically, and editing the transcript edits the media — deleting a word deletes that moment of video, and moving a sentence moves the footage with it. A traditional timeline remains available for finer control.
Usage and boundaries
- Workflow: covers recording, editing, refining, and sharing, plus repurposing finished cuts into clips and translated versions.
- AI features: Underlord is the official AI editing agent, with the official example of turning “a raw recording into a tight cut in minutes”; other tools include Studio Sound noise removal and voice enhancement, filler-word and retake removal, eye contact correction, AI avatars and voice cloning, captions, translation, and clip creation.
- Platforms: the desktop app supports macOS 14 (Sonoma), Windows 11, and newer; a web editor also exists at web.descript.com. Downloads are on the official download page.
- Agent and developer interface: the official “API + MCP” offering lets AI assistants drive the editor — the MCP page lists Claude (app, web, or Claude Code), ChatGPT (via its app directory), and any MCP-speaking client. Nothing needs to be installed or configured as a server, and AI-based edits consume the same AI credits as in-app usage. The supported scope belongs to the official MCP page.
- Pricing: a free plan is available, with more features and quotas on paid subscriptions; current plans belong to the official pricing page.
Discussion in the show
The Weekly #005 chapter “从 Descript 到软件成为 Agent 插件” (From Descript to software as an agent plugin) revolves around whether coding agents can call it. In the Chinese transcript, Orange describes Descript’s positioning: it started as an audio editor and gained video features later; Guizang adds that it is commonly used for cutting videos, trimming long footage into hits. Orange judged that Descript, at the time, could not be called by Codex and worked only with its own agent, and that it keeps its Skill-like features locked inside its own agent, forming a closed ecosystem. He also relays that an investor asked why nobody builds “the Codex of Descript” and offered to invest. Yang Pan turns this into a pattern judgment: the old model was putting agents inside software, and going forward software should become an agent plugin — turning itself into a harness for agents. These are participant judgments and retellings; the interface Descript actually offers belongs to the official API + MCP page.
