What Claude Cowork is
Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s agent product for office and file-based work, part of the Claude product family. The official description of how it works: you give a goal, and Claude works across folders and tools you choose to complete a multi-step task and deliver work for your review. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max plans first, with Team and Free plans to follow and Enterprise customers receiving at least 30 days’ notice (see the official blog post). Uses and boundaries
Typical Cowork tasks on the official page are multi-step knowledge work — organizing folders, reviewing in bulk, scheduled reports, and building spreadsheets: you say what you need rather than how, Claude opens the files and tools required, shows each step, and can run tasks on a schedule or several chunks in parallel, continuing in the cloud after you close your laptop. It includes a built-in browser separate from your own for opening sites, reading pages and filling forms; the page marks this as available in the Cowork desktop app on Pro, Max, and Team plans.
Permissions are the core boundary: Claude can only reach the folders and tools you choose, deleting anything needs your approval, and significant actions ask first by default (see the official Use Cowork safely article). The official FAQ adds that computer use — direct screen interaction — is in research preview for both Cowork and Claude Code, and that agentic tasks consume your usage limits faster than chat.
How it relates to Claude and Claude Code

The official FAQ positions Claude Code for software engineering — writing, debugging and shipping code — while Cowork is built for non-coding knowledge work such as research, analysis and document creation; both use the same agentic approach.
